Dr. Schmalz’s special interest lies in hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, and he has written many articles pertaining to these diseases. He also holds positions on various professional committees, including chief of Endoscopy at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Racine, Wis., and fellow status with the American College of Gastroenterology. He was recently named chairman of the section of Gastroenterology at St. Luke’s Medical Center and is the Governor of Wisconsin for the ACG (1998-present). Dr. Schmalz has also been chosen as one of the “The Best Doctors in America.” He enjoys speaking to people on the community level. He wants people to be informed regarding their GI health. He was spoken to various community groups on such subjects as irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal bleeding, and a common complaint, heartburn. He also travels throughout the country and speaks to his peers professionally regarding the most current treatments and procedures available today in treating patients who suffer from gastrointestinal illness.
